Jimi Hendrix

James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. His mainstream career lasted only four years, but he is widely regarded as one of the most influential guitarists in history and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. He died on September 18, 1970 at the age of 27. His cause of death is disputed, but the coroner believed that he choked to death on his own vomit.

Kurt Cobain

Kurt Donald Cobain was an American singer, songwriter, and musician, best known as the guitarist and frontman of the rock band Nirvana. He is remembered as one of the most iconic and influential rock musicians in the history of alternative music. He died on April 5, 1994 at the age of 27 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His death, along with Jimi Hendrix’s and a few other stars, have started the rumor of an infamous “27 club” curse.

Princess Diana

Diana, Princess of Wales, born Diana Frances Spencer on 1 July 1961, was a member of the British royal family. She was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, and the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry. Diana’s activism and glamour made her an international icon and earned her enduring popularity as well as unprecedented public scrutiny, exacerbated by her tumultuous private life. She died on August 31, 1997 at age 36, after being involved in a deadly car accident.

River Phoenix

River Jude Phoenix was an American actor, musician, and animal activist. He died on October 31, 1993 at age 23. He died of a cardiac arrest that was caused by having large amounts of heroin and cocaine in his system. His brother Joaquin, sister Rain, Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Samantha Mathis were all present at the time of his death.

Anna Nicole Smith

Anna Nicole Smith, born Vickie Lynn Hogan on November 28, 1967, was an American model, actress, and television personality. Smith first gained popularity in Playboy magazine when she won the title of 1993 Playmate of the Year. She died on February 8, 2007 at age 39 from an accidental drug overdose of prescription medication.

Brittany Murphy

Brittany Murphy was an American actress and singer. A native of Atlanta, Murphy moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and pursued a career in acting. Her breakthrough role was as Tai Frasier in Clueless (1995), followed by supporting roles in independent films such as Freeway (1996) and Bongwater (1998). While she’d had issues with drug use, in December 2009 she died of pneumonia at the age of 32.

Janis Joplin

Famous for fronting Big Brother and the Holding Company as well as a successful solo career, Janis Joplin was one of the premier psychedelic rock acts of the late 1960s. Unfortunately, her stardom was cut short when she passed away from a heroin overdose in 1970.

Heath Ledger

Australian actor Heath Ledger made a big impression as a young man with roles in movies like 10 Things I Hate About YouA Knights Tale, and The Patriot. Ledger went on to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight. Unfortunately, Ledger passed away from a prescription drug overdose before that film’s release, earning the statue posthumously.

Jayne Mansfield

A sex symbol in the 1950s and 60s, actress Jayne Mansfield received a Golden Globe in 1957 for her role in Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?. Sadly, Mansfield died ten years later in a car accident at the young age of 34.

John Lennon

Lennon become an international sensation as a member of influential rock group the Beatles in the 60s, sharing songwriting credit for many of their most popular songs with Paul McCartney. After the band broke up, Lennon went on to a successful solo career. He had just released the album Double Fantasy when he was unexpectedly shot to death by a mentally ill fan at age 40.

Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye is remembered as one of history’s most important soul singers, thanks to classic songs like “Let’s Get It On” and “What’s Going On?.” Tragically, Gaye was shot and called in an altercation with his own father. The day following his death would have been his 45th birthday.

Philip Seymour Hoffman

Philip Seymour Hoffman was an American actor, director, and producer. Best known for his distinctive supporting and character roles — typically lowlifes, eccentrics, bullies, and misfits — Hoffman acted in many films, including leading roles, from the early 1990s until his death in 2014. He struggled with drug addiction as a young adult and relapsed in 2013 after many years of abstinence. In February 2014, he died of combined drug intoxication. 

Steve Irwin

Stephen Robert Irwin, nicknamed “The Crocodile Hunter”, was an Australian zookeeper, conservationist and television personality. Irwin achieved worldwide fame from the television series The Crocodile Hunter (1996–2007), an internationally broadcast wildlife documentary series which he co-hosted with his wife Terri. He died on September 4, 2006 when he was 44 years old as the result of a stingray injury.
